FAO to launch two new projects in Azerbaijan

UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) plans to launch two new projects in Azerbaijan next month, Head of FAO's Partnership and Liasion Office in Azerbaijan, Melek Cakmak told Report.

One of the projects is related to the safe storage of pesticides. The budget of the project will be $ 8.6 million. Among its participants, there are Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, along with Azerbaijan. Therefore, the coordination mechanism for the implementation of the project will be established.

Another project that FAO will carry is to increase the technical capacity of the veterinary laboratory. At the moment, it is at the last stage.

Azerbaijan has been a member of FAO since 1995. The organization's office in the country has been operating since 2007. The FAO's Partnership and Coordination Office in Azerbaijan was established in 2015. The "Azerbaijan Room" was opened at the headquarters of the FAO in Rome on September 25.

Azerbaijan and FAO implemented 53 projects in 1995-2018, in addition, currently, the implementation of another six projects are underway, and four are planned to commence in the near future.

FAO attaches great importance to partnership with the private sector and cooperation with the international community in project implementation. Priority areas for cooperation with Azerbaijan are to support the development of agriculture, improve the living conditions of rural residents, as well as support the Azerbaijani government to carry out reforms in this area.

FAO's support for the food and agricultural sector of Azerbaijan is determined by the priorities set out in the new Country Program Framework, developed jointly with the Government of Azerbaijan, adapted to the requirements of "Azerbaijan 2020: Vision for the Future" and other national strategic documents.

The Current Country Program Framework covers the period 2016 - 2020, combining advanced international practices and global standards with national and regional experiences.

An agreement on FAO-Azerbaijan Partnership Program (FAPP) was signed in May 2015 and a $ 10 million partnership framework was established for 2016-2020. Azerbaijan Government ratified the agreement and FAPP Operational Framework approved in December 2016.

Recently, Baku hosted an event dedicated to the launch of a partnership program with FAO. Partnership Program, signed by Azerbaijan and FAO, allows the cooperation between Azerbaijan and the international organization to enter a new phase.

FAO supports development of women farmers in Azerbaijan. These goals will be implemented under the project "Azerbaijani Agrarian Woman". The budget of the project is about $ 800,000.Main goal is to improve the technical skills of female farmers and to improve their access to the market.

FAO will implement the projectthat will enable women and young people to increase self-employment by expansion of knowledge and vocational education in agriculture. The project will cover the population engaged in agriculture or having received agricultural education, both special secondary and higher. This will increase the incomes of the population and diversify their sources.
