Oman- Ministry bans export of kingfish and longtail tuna

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) has banned the export of two varieties of fish, in a move to have more produce in the local market.

H E Dr Fuad bin Ja'afar bin Mohammed al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, recently issued the Ministerial Decision No 75/2019 banning the export of kingfish 'kanaad' and longtail tuna 'sahwa'.

'Regulation of the 'Sultanate's Exports of Species of Fish Law' prohibits the export of longtail tuna and kingfish,' stated the decision issued on March 4.

The ban also entails a fine of RO100 for violators.

While Article 2 of the Ministerial Decision prevents export of the fish, Article 12 states that RO100 fine should be imposed on those who contravene the decision. The fine may be doubled for repeated violations, it added.

However, 'The decision allows exporting canned fish of yellowfin tuna in frozen and chilled packaging, as it is intended to improve the quality, and provides additional value to the fish,' the ministry stated.

It added, 'Chilled yellowfin tuna should be exported by air only.'

The exception also requires that companies who are buying fish need to obtain a licence and get quality certification approved by the ministry.
