Lebanese Pres. calls on UNHCR to facilitate Syrian refugees return


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, March 8 (KUNA) -- Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Friday called on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to aid Lebanon in the process of facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homes.
In a statement, the Lebanese Presidency said that President Aoun during his meeting with UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi stressed the importance of continuing the cooperation with Lebanon regarding the return of refugees' file.
He affirmed the cooperation between the Syrian and the Lebanese authorities on organizing the refugees' return.
During the meeting, the UN official pointed out to his field visit to a number of Syrian areas, where he was briefed on the situation of displaced persons who returned to their homes, describing it as reassuring, the statement said.
The Lebanese president stressed that the return of the Syrian refugees living in Lebanon to their country is not linked to the political solution to the Syrian crisis, adding that Lebanon has facilitated the voluntary return of some 162,000 refugees. (end) ayb.aa
