Japan to provide USD 13 mln aid to Syria, Lebanon


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, March 1 (KUNA) -- Japan said Friday it will extend USD 13 million in emergency grant aid in response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria and Lebanon.
The aid is to provide humanitarian assistance in the areas of health, sanitation, hygiene and shelter as well as basic needs through five international organizations including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the Foreign Ministry said in a press release. Of the amount, USD 4.9 million will be spent in Syria, according to the ministry, "This assistance for the displaced people affected by the rapidly deteriorating situation of northeastern Syria due to operations against Islamic State (IS) is intended to improve water and sanitation environment for about 37,500 people as well as to deliver life-saving support for about 19,000 people. In addition to emergency medical services to around 16,400 people in various camps," it said. Japan will also provide the essential life-saving items and protection services to approximately 6,700 Palestine refugees near Damascus to improve their living condition.
Meanwhile, USD 8.1 million will be used for Lebanon to improve the living condition for approximately 40,000 Syrian refugees and people living in neighborhoods. The assistance will also allow about 280,000 Palestine refugees to access the health services, it added. (end) mk.bb
