Oman- Lobster fishing season from Friday

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) has announced that the lobster fishing season for the year 2019 will begin from March 1 in the coasts of governorates of Dhofar, Al Wusta and South Sharqiyah.

MoAF requested traditional fishermen to comply with the permitted fishing methods in the waters of the sultanate, during the season in March and April, and to avoid fishing egg-laden lobsters, as well as lobsters that are less than 8cm.

An official in the ministry said, 'We have prepared all the guidance, awareness, regulatory, research and statistical efforts.

'We intensified inspections during the season for the application of the Maritime Fishing Law and its executive regulations in cooperation with the fishermen in the governorates.' Lobster is an important marine resource due to its high value and increasing demand in local and international markets.

'We have conducted several awareness campaigns, lectures and programmes for artisanal fishermen to educate them on the laws and regulations and ways to preserve this natural resource,' an official in the ministry said.

The ministry calls all fishermen, companies and individuals to register their lobster catch during the fishing season.

No individual or an organisation is allowed to trade in or export lobster after the end of the season unless registered with the ministry.
