Qatar- QICCA settles 10 commercial cases worth QR466bn in 2018

DOHA: The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) settled 10 commercial disputes involving QR466bn in 2018, QICCA board member for International Relations Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali Al Thani (pictured) said on Sunday.

Highlighting the centre's accomplishments during the past years, Sheikh Dr Thani said that QICCA received in 2018 more than 22 arbitration requests, 10 of them were settled.

These arbitration cases included disputes related to contracts of construction, commercial agencies, insurance, communication, engineering, real estate, purchases, import and finances, he added.

Sheikh Dr Thani noted that QICCA maintains a list of qualified arbitrators including 280 persons, of them 129 Qatari arbitrators and the rest are from GCC, Arab and foreign countries.

He assured that the centre organised last year many training programs in cooperation with theQatar University's Canter for Continuing Education including Qualification and Preparation of Arbitrators Program,Setting up Companies and Commercial Agencies (14-18 January 2018), Arbitration in Engineering Contracts (18-29 November) and Anti- Money Laundering (2-6 December 2018).

Sheikh Dr Thani also noted that QICCA has provided trainings for students of Law College at Qatar University.

He pointed out that the centre has signed many MOUs with many institutions to strengthen cooperation including MOU with Istanbul Arbitration Centre.

Last year, QICCA held 9 seminars including 'Integrated Suite of Contracts, Key Features of the Sudanese Arbitration Law and its Judicial Applications, Qualities and Ethics of Arbitrator, Legal Aspects of Investment in the State of Qatar, Characteristics of Arbitration and Condition and Involvement under the Qatari Arbitration Law, Arbitration of Maritime and Engineering Disputes,Extension of Time in Construction Projects, Project Management and Construction Contracts.

He said that QICCA participated in 8 local and international seminars and conferences.

In July 2018, the World Council of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) appointed Sheikh Dr. Thani bin Ali Al-Thani to the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC.
