BEIRUT, 23rd February, 2019 (WAM) -- The American University of Science and Technology in Beirut has honoured UAE Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamad Saeed Sultan Al Shamsi, in recognition for his diplomatic, social and humanitarian achievements.

This came in a ceremony attended by the University President, Hiam Sakr, academic and administrative staff, and Joseph Spiteri, the Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon, along with a number of dignitaries and media professionals.

Addressing the ceremony, Sakr said that by honouring "Ambassador Al Shamsi, the University recognises the noble deeds and accomplishments made by the UAE ambassador and his country in Lebanon."

Boutros Harb, Chairperson of the University's Board of Trustee, hailed the "exceptional ties binding the UAE and Lebanon", commending the support provided by the Emirates to his country to survive its crisis.

"The Ambassador represents a dear friendly country whose values of tolerance and acceptance genuinely manifested themselves in the recent visit by Pope Francis," he added.

For his part, the ambassador spoke high of the significant role played by the university in promoting literacy and counterterrorism efforts.

"Since the establishment of the Union in 1971, the UAE realised the importance of investing in human capital," said the ambassador, citing late Sheikh Zayed's famous saying "a country is not measured by the size of its area on the map. A country is truly measured by its heritage and culture."
