Turkey's parliament speaker steps down for mayor race


(MENAFN) Turkish Binali Yildirim stepped down as Parliament Speaker Monday night in order to fight for the post of Istanbul mayor.

Addressing lawmaker, the now former parliament speaker stated that "it was a pleasure for the last seven months working with our lawmakers who are representing the will of our people."

Yildirim added "I tried to rule the parliament without discriminating any political party group and in a way based on compromise."

He is now set for candidacy for the mayor of Istanbul, representing the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
