Brazilian government has new measures for dam disaster prevention

(MENAFN) Brazil's Ministry of Mining and Energy has revealed measures to avoid a repeat of January's fatal dam disaster, which killed over 169 people and left 140 missing.

The country has about a thousand dams similar to the tailings dam that collapsed on Jan. 25 in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais state.

The new measures include eliminating or modifying upstream tailings dams like the one that burst, releasing nearly 13 million cubic meters of waste.

The government said: "this resolution establishes precautionary regulatory measures to ensure the stability of mining dams, especially those built or altered by the method known as upstream."
