Oman- Vegetable prices surged by over 7% in January

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Vegetable prices in January increased by 7.60 per cent as compared to the same month in 2018, the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) has said.

The increase is being attributed to financial losses suffered by farmers last year and price rise in Gulf and Arab markets.

Saed al Kharusi, chairman of the Board of Omani Agriculture Association said, 'Many farmers did not cultivate large areas of land due to financial losses. This has affected the supply of many agricultural products. Price of agricultural products in the Gulf and other Arab markets such as Jordan too has increased.'

Kharusi said that farmers get the lowest percentage of profits. The farmers' situation also has an impact on the consumer market. 'All studies confirm that trade brokers take 75 per cent of the profits of agricultural products but farmers get the lowest percentage of these profits.'

So, it is important to protect the interest of the farmers, said Kharusi. 'This will help boost Oman's agricultural produce and also help decrease prices.'
