(MENAFN) A local official declared that over eight Afghan police officers have died as three more were injured after Taliban attacked a security checkpoint in northern province of Balkh overnight.
District chief Matin Khojazada confirmed: "Taliban attacked a security checkpoint with guns and rocket propelled grenades mid-night. Police officers guarding a gas pipeline in Harab-e-Mazari village, Chimtal district responded to the attack. The exchange of fire left eight police killed and three others wounded."
He added that many militants have been killed and injured in the clashes, however, the specific number was not determined yet as the militants didn't leave any fighters behind.
Zabiullah Mujahid, a purported Taliban spokesman shared on Twitter that the militants' clashes also devastated the security checkpoint and two police vehicle.
