Doha: As part of the emergency assistance provided through ‘Arsal_Relief' campaign, a delegation of volunteers from Qatar Charity (QC) visited Lebanon to participate in aid distribution and relief assistance in Arsal and neighboring areas.

The aid is provided by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD). The Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has recently given directions to allocate US$50m in support to Syrian refugees and displaced persons suffering from dire humanitarian conditions caused by displacement and the cold winter weather in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and within Syria.

From the grant, QR5m were allocated through the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) to support the ‘Arsal Relief' campaign, which is supervised by Qatar Charity.

The project aims to support Syrian refugees hit by the storms that struck the region and securing their minimum basic needs for survival by providing the necessary supplies, particularly winter necessities.

It also aims to help and strengthen the resilience of displaced persons, with particular attention to vulnerable groups including women, children and people with special needs.

Emergency relief assistance was provided in several camps including Beqaa, Arsal and Akkar. The project aims at setting up 500 tens which were damaged completely or partially, distribute heating fuel to 5,000 families, 40 liters per family, and 10,000 mattresses to 5,000 families.

Some 10,000 blankets will be provided to 5,000 families, in addition to the distribution of 10,000 food baskets, 500 awnings for tents affected by storms, and vouchers for winter clothes to 4,000 families in need.

This project, which is funded by QFFD and implemented by QC, targets 11,000 Syrian refugee families (nearly 60,000 people), and aims to improve their living conditions and alleviate their suffering by providing services and aid to the Syrian refugees as well as to the poorest segments of the Lebanese society.

This emergency intervention comes in cooperation with QFFD as Syrian refugees in Lebanon go through renewed suffering every winter caused by rain, snow, damaged tents and the lack of heating facilities in the camps where they live.

This intervention came following the snowstorms that hit Lebanon last month, and aims to assist the affected Syrian refugees in surviving the harsh weather conditions and mitigate the damage caused, especially in the town of Arsal and other affected areas.

According to the report of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 69 percent of the Syrian refugee families in Lebanon live below the poverty line, while more than 51 percent of them live below the minimum expenditure.
