(MENAFN) Nearly 41,200 hectares of forest land in southern and central Chile has been destroyed in wildfires.

According to the country's National Forestry Corporation (CONAF), the figure represents an increase of 45 percent from last year in the area of forest land destroyed in the fire season.

Authorities say there have been 4,126 forest fires so far this season, mainly in the regions of Valparaiso and Aysen.

CONAF head said: "we are working" to restrain the fires, and the "first priority is to save lives."
