ABU DHABI, 10th February, 2019 (WAM) -- H.H. Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Assistant to the Chairman of Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, for Women's Affairs and Head of the Higher Committee of the Ataya Initiative, said Ataya is a national initiative that embodies the principles of continuity and sustainability in humanitarian and developmental work.

Ataya (means 'giving' in Arabic), a charity exhibition organised by ERC under the patronage and vision of H.H. Sheikha Shamsa, has quickly become a landmark in Abu Dhabi's cultural calendar, where a wide range of trendy distinct fashion wear, jewellery, home accessories and furniture by talented designers and artists from the UAE and the region is exhibited and sold.

Sheikha Shamsa, who is the wife of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC, added that the Ataya Exhibition, which will coincide with the 'Year of Tolerance' announced by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aims to create constructive partnerships between individuals, institutions and companies to respond to urgent humanitarian causes, improve people's lives and achieve their dreams of a dignified life.

She made this statement during her speech at a press conference that was held today at the ERC's headquarters to announce the 8th Ataya Exhibition, which will be held from 24th to 28th February at the Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi, given on her behalf by Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, Secretary-General of the ERC.

Sheikha Shamsa stressed that the importance of the initiative became clear during the seven previous editions of the exhibition, which supported key services, such as health, education, social services, and motherhood and childhood services.

"The revenue from this year's exhibition will help establish a hospital in Sharjah that will provide the necessary healthcare to those in need and to underprivileged families. The hospital is the first of its kind in the country that offers therapeutic services for free to those with chronic diseases whose health cards do not cover their treatment and medication costs. This reflects the achievements of the Ataya Initiative and its efforts to expand its local and international activities to benefit those in need," she added.

A total of 85 exhibitors from the UAE, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Japan, India, Bahrain, Turkey, Jordan, Oman, and Italy will participate in the exhibition.

Proceeds from Ataya 2017 helped support patients suffering from renal failure in Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, Pakistan and Comoros. Fully-equipped dialysis were provided to these countries to help ease pain and suffering of patients.
