Afghanistan- Nimroz print media succumbs to financial woes

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Seven cash-strapped magazines stopped publications in southwestern Nimroz province during the past three years, with only the state-run monthly remaining in the market, an official said Sunday.

According to local officials, three years back seven monthly magzines were published in the province but now they have ceased operating due to severe economic problems. However, the government magazine is in circulation.

Syed Hamid Sadaat, head of the Nimroz Information and Cultural Affairs Department, said print media blossomed until 20014 but they started succumbing to economic crisis during the last few years.

He said currently no magazine was printed in Nimroz except the state-sponsored Nimroz Magazine.

Sadaat termed print media's role in informing and awakening the people as vital and urged the government and the private sector to support print media outlets in the province.

Fazal Rasoul Mahmoodi, in charge of the Nimroz Monthly Magazine, said the printing cost of one magazine was at least 20 afghanis but the same copy was sold in the bazaar for five afghanis, which could not meet the expenses.

He promised if donors provided financial support to them, they have 'attractive and valuable' subjects in mind to write about and make the print media charming for readers.

Naqibullah, a Nimroz youth, said people missed reading about major events and issues due to the lack of magzines and print media outlets.

He said few years back several magazines were published in the province and enriched people's knowledge about major events they had missed reading about.
