Brazil to tackle organized crime

(MENAFN) Brazil's government has announced it will pass an anti-crime bill to congress that strengthens penalties for serious crimes.

In a written message to lawmakers the president said: "the Brazilian government is declaring war on organized crime."

Crime in the country has "set records" due to the "weakening" of security forces and "too permissive" laws, he added.

Restricting crime was one of Bolsonaro's main campaign vows, and soon after taking office on Jan. 1 he eased weapon laws by presidential verdict, saying people had the right to arm themselves at home against intruders.
