Vodafone invested over QR8bn in Qatar since 2009

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Vodafone has invested more than QR8bn in Qatar since it switched on its mobile network in the country in March 2009, said chief executive officer, Sheikh Hamad Abdulla Jassim al-Thani.
'More than 50% of this was on the mobility segment, Sheikh Hamad told Gulf Times at a media event at the Four Seasons yesterday.
In the last 10 years Vodafone has been in Qatar; the country has become 'one of the most advanced in terms of digital adoption, technology infrastructure and pioneering innovation,
he said.
'I am extremely proud of our role at the forefront of the digital era, which has seen us being a leading partner in providing intelligent platforms and connectivity solutions to the smart cities of the future to our 4G and now, commercially live 5G network, to our growing broadband footprint, and to the ecosystem of digital products and services we
have built.
He said Vodafone expects that the handset suppliers will be able to meet the demand of 5G technology as its services get
expanded in Qatar.
Vodafone Qatar has made significant progress in establishing its fixed infrastructure in several locations around the country and is providing the backbone and fixed infrastructure for many of the country's iconic developments, pointed out Ramy Boctor, Vodafone Qatar chief technology officer.
In the past seven months alone, the company has provided fibre connectivity, capable of handling speeds of up to 1Gbps, in more than 20 locations across Qatar including The Pearl, Lusail City, Msheireb Downtown Doha, Education City, C-Ring road, Al Khor road, West Bay and Wukair to name a few.
'Our fixed line network will bring much needed sustainable and effective competition to Qatar which benefits businesses and consumers alike by encouraging further investment and ultimately delivering innovation and efficiency, said Boctor.
Significantly, Vodafone Qatar was 'one of the first operators in the world to go live with 5G commercially and the first to have connected customers to 5G in the country. This comes after the company has achieved big progress in building out its 5G network across the country since switching it on in August last year.
Since then, the company has continued to roll out its 5G network in key locations across the country from Al Waab to Katara and several others.
In the coming months, Vodafone will be making 'a series of exciting announcements related to the ‘GigaNet' launch. These include developments on major partnerships, new areas for fibre deployment, and new products and services all designed to engage and educate customers about the network and its many capabilities.
