Russian passenger detained for attempting to hijack plane to Moscow

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A Russian passenger was detained on Tuesday for attempting to hijack an aircraft on its way to Moscow, the country's top investigative agency said.
The aircraft was en route from the western Siberian city of Surgut to the Russian capital when the man, who appeared intoxicated, tried to break into the cockpit, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
"Threatening that he had a weapon," the man demanded that the aircraft change its destination, the statement said.
The incident caused the flight crew to conduct an emergency landing at an airport in the city of Khanty-Mansiisk, about 300 kilometres west of Surgut.
The passenger, identified as a 41-year-old Russian man, had demanded that the aircraft go to Afghanistan, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.
The flight was operated by Russian carrier Aeroflot, the report said.
