Qatar- Shura Council discusses country's medical services

The Shura Council held its regular weekly meeting yesterday under the chairmanship of Speaker H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Council discussed a request for a general discussion on the conditions of medical services presented by a number of members, who praised the State's provision of medical services to citizens and residents, but pointed out the need to improve these services in accordance with the State's potential to upgrade medical services to a better status and optimal performance.

During the discussion, the members of the Council expressed appreciation to the great development witnessed by the health services in Qatar, thanks to the directives of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the great support provided by the State to this important sector.

However, they pointed out that there are some shortcomings and negatives that need to be addressed quickly, including the need to pay more attention to the emergency departments in hospitals, the long waiting periods for appointments, and the shortage of beds and rooms.

The members of the Council called on evaluating the experience of previous health insurance and to identify the negative aspects and ways to address these negatives to take advantage of that experience in the new health insurance project.

They pointed out that the development and expansion of health services should keep pace with population growth, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 for the health sector.

After extensive discussion, the Council decided to refer the matter to the Services and the Public Utilities Committee for further study, taking into account the observations, complaints, and proposals of citizens on medical services and to report thereon to the Council.

At the end of the meeting, the Speaker briefed the Council on the participation of the Council's delegation under his chairmanship in the conference of the Association of Senates, Shura and Equivalent Councils in Africa and the Arab World, which focused on the experiences of national reconciliation which led to political stability, social peace and peace-building, held in Morocco's Rabat from January 17 to 18.

Also the Speaker briefed the Council on his meetings on the sidelines of the conference, which included the meetings with Speaker of the House of Representatives and Speaker of the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco, Speaker of the parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO), and President of the Latin American Parliament, and the next President of the Latin American Parliament.

The Speaker noted that the conference, which was attended by the heads of national and regional parliaments in the Arab world, Africa and Latin America, and prominent national and international human rights figures in the field of reconciliation and transitional justice, welcomed in the closing statement the hosting of the State of Qatar for the next session of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, to be held in Doha from April 6 to 10.

A number of students from Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies participated in the meeting of the Shura Council yesterday, as part of the Council's keenness to familiarize the students with its functions, responsibilities, how to conduct its sessions, its legislative role, the functions of its specialized committees, its working mechanisms and channels of communication with citizens, in order to receive their observations and suggestions to discuss them and work to achieve them in cooperation with the esteemed government.
