UN urged to reassess sanctions against Sudan

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council received an appeal to reassess sanctions imposed against Sudan, since the country has been witnessed a better atmosphere in Darfur.

China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Wu Haitao made the call while addressing the UN Security Council.

The envoy stressed that "the Security Council should review the sanctions on Sudan in a timely manner and make adjustments in the light of the latest developments with a view of eventually lifting the sanctions."

Haitao further added that the move will be an indication of optimism to involved countries as well as a push to peace and stability in the Sudanese region.
