Italian official acclaims Muslims' role in fighting radicalism in Europe


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, Jan 18 (KUNA) -- Deputy Foreign Minister of Italy Emanuela Del Re has lauded the role of Muslims in tackling religious extremism in Europe. The role of Muslim civil society in Europe has been and continues to be essential in the fight against radicalism and extremism, Del Re said in statements to local media on Friday.
She, is currently representing her country in the 15th ministerial meeting of the 5+ 5 Dialogue group between western Mediterranean and Arab Maghreb countries which concluded in Malta today.
Del Re noted that this issue was discussed and recognized by the foreign ministers of the participating West Mediterranean countries.
She cited as example the great role of mosques and Muslim schools in countering extremist ideas and groups.
The two-day meeting was co-chaired by the Maltese Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria Abdelkader Messahel.
The 5+5 group includes Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Malta from Europe and Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania from the Arab Maghreb. (end) mn.ibi
