Russia shows desire to reconcile Palestinians

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- Russia on Thursday called on the Palestinians anew to close their ranks and urged for resolving the Palestinian question on basis of the international legitimacy.

Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the renewed stance was expressed by Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian president special envoy to the Middle East, during a phone call with Ismail Haniyah, head of the politburo of the Islamic movement, Hamas.

Bogdanov, during the phone conversation, expressed readiness to hold inter-Palestinian conciliation talks in Moscow.

For his part, Haniyah briefed the Russian official about Egypt's efforts to improve conditions in Gaza Strip.

Hamas has been in control of Gaza since 2007, when the Islamists drove followers of the president and Fatah chief, Mahmoud Abbas, out of the strip in bitter fighting. The two main groups, Hamas and Fatah, have remained at loggerheads over diverse issues; despite mediation efforts by Cairo.

Russia, under leadership of Vladimir Putin, has repeatedly shown desire to broaden its role on the regional arena, in shadow of an already solidified presence in Syria. (end) as.rk
