UAEREP's First Cycle Awardees present final project results at IREF

ABU DHABI, 17th January, 2019 (WAM) -- The UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science's 3rd International Rain Enhancement Forum, IREF, today came to a conclusion after witnessing four days of highly productive discussions on some of the most exciting global innovations in the field.

The final day of the forum featured a discussion of further collaborations between the programme's awardees, focused on the future priorities of the UAEREP Awardees Working Group, joint modelling and field campaign projects, and further support for individual research projects.

A special session dealing with Artificial Intelligence, AI, including key issues such as AI-based practices in everyday life, the potential development of machine learning for weather forecasting, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, for weather modification, and the application of "Big-data" and algorithms for hydro-meteorological research and monitoring.

Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director of the National Center of Meteorology, NCM, said, "Our 3rd International Rain Enhancement Forum at this year's ADSW has represented the latest landmark in the UAE quest to advance innovation in this exciting and emerging field. The widespread international interest in our programme has enabled us to build a cluster of world-beating expertise dedicated to deepening our understanding of climate phenomena and rainfall. Thanks to the unstinting support of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, the UAE is continuing to gain global recognition for its tireless efforts to seek new solutions for combating the threat of water stress in regions around the world."

Alya Al Mazroui, Director of the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science, commented, "Our annual international forum is designed to enable productive discussions between all our Programme awardees and the many other leading scientists in attendance. Our awardees are already carrying out ground-breaking work across a wide range of fields. Through such innovation, we are making real progress in enhancing and further developing capacity in the field both locally and globally while spurring global research collaborations on new advances in this important field."

Dr Deon Terblanche, Special Science Advisor, South African Weather Service and former Director of Research at WMO, said "The UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science's third international forum has provided a very useful platform for productive discussions dedicated to rain enhancement science. The research projects being pursued by the programme's awardees are exceptionally promising and prove the potential of this increasingly important scientific field."

This annual event brings together international researchers, scientists and stakeholders to discuss the latest scientific and technological advances related to new water security solutions. As one of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2019's highlights, the forum also covered the final results of the programme's 1st Cycle awardee projects, updates on 2nd and 3rd Cycle awardee projects, global water challenges, youth participation in water-related issues, and the role of women in water sciences.
