Abbas says Palestine to work on ensuring collective action, construction


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday stressed that his country would spare no effort in ensuring collective action for making progress based on achievements made by the Group of 77 (G77) and China over 55 years.
This came in Abbas' speech during a ceremony at the UN General Assembly, while taking presidency of the Group of 77.
Assuming the group is undoubtedly a big responsibility upon Palestine, which will defend the group's interests and enhance stances of countries, which are UN member states, Abbas said.
During its presidency of the group, Palestine would work on boosting ties between the G77 and China, and all UN partners based on respecting national sovereignty and supporting development agenda as well as protecting interests of the countries of the Global South and their fair issues, he noted.
He stressed the importance of hosting the second UN conference on South-South cooperation to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, next March, 40 years after the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action and the success of its objectives.
Abbas affirmed that the enhancement of security and peace in the Middle East would open the way for achieving sustainable development for the region's countries in accordance with international agreements and treaties.
He warned that the continuation of Israeli settlement and occupation of Palatine's land impede programs of cooperation and development as well as regional linking of all countries of the region.
He reiterated Palestine's commitment to the international law and legitimacy, solving the conflict peacefully, ending the Israeli occupation, establishing an independent Palestine state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital to live in peace and security beside Israel as well as resolving all issues of the final status, mainly the refugees and prisoners, in accordance with the relevant international legitimacy's resolutions and the Arab peace initiative.
Chairing the G77, Palestine will take part in the UN General Assembly's sessions and conferences held under the auspices of it or the UN. Palestine can offer proposals, data and amendments on behalf of the G77. Under the presidency, Paletine also will operate like a member state of the UN.
The UN General Assembly decided to grant Palestine additional rights and privileges adopted in 2018 with a majority of 146 votes, while Israel, the UN and Australia voted against the decision. (end) asf.hm
