Pompeo is holding talks with Omani officials on regional issues


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MUSCAT, Jan 14 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is holding talks on Monday with the Omani official in charge of external affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi, and other ranking officials of the sultanate.

The official Omani media have confirmed Pompeo's arrival in the sultanate, today, for the top-level talks with the leaders, capping a regional tour that had taken him to Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait was originally included in his mission schedule however his visit to the country was delayed due to personal reasons.

His regional tour is aimed at assuring Washington's allies following a recent decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw the estimated 2,000 American troops from Syria.

In Riyadh and ahead of proceeding to Oman, he held talks with King Salman bin Abdulaziz on regional issues, according to the official Saudi Press Agency. He also held discussions with the Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Prince Mohammad bin Salman on regional affairs and the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The American embassy in Riyadh said in a statement that the talks between Pompeo and Prince Mohammad dealt with the Yemeni file, adding that they agreed on the necessity to "calm the situation and adhere to terms of the Sweden agreement particularly with respect of the cease-fire, forces' redeployment in Al-Hodeida and the aspired political settlement to end the strife."
