UN steps up financial efforts to tackle Yemen's famine crisis

(MENAFN) The UN is granting Yemen yet another USD32 million in its campaign to tackle famine, a crisis the country is massively suffering from.

The funds will be transferring via the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to the humanitarian efforts in Yemen.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock declared the news with the Executive Director of the World Food Program (WFP) David Beasley.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed that "the funds will allow WFP to ramp up humanitarian logistical operations, including increases in humanitarian air cargo, transport more humanitarian workers, provide more accommodation spaces, including in Hodeidah, and expand emergency telecommunications."

Beasley stressed that "the WFP is scaling up to increase its assistance from 8 million people a month to 12 million a month and this contribution from the CERF will help make that happen."
