Italy mulls over reopening embassy in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, Jan 11 (KUNA) -- Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said his government was considering the possibility of reopening Italy embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012.

The government is assessing whether it is necessary to reopen the embassy and when, he told reporters on the fringes of the European Future Forum (EFF) on Friday.

The minister, however, stressed the need to restore stability and security in Syria as a prerequisite to accelerating the pace in this direction.

It is crucial for Italy to have diplomatic missions abroad but there have been a horrible war in Syria and the situation there is still far from stable, Milanesi said, stressing the need to double efforts to stabilize Syria. (end) mn.nss.gb
