Jordan- King, Pompeo discuss strategic partnership, region

Amman, Jan 8 (Petra) –– His Majesty King Abdullah II on Tuesday held talks with visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that focused on further boosting the strategic Jordanian-US partnership, as well as the developments in the Middle East.

During the talks, which were attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein, the King and Pompeo discussed prospects for expanding cooperation between the two countries in all fields. His Majesty said Jordan appreciated US aid to development programs in the Kingdom that will enable it to counter economic challenges resulting from regional crises.

The US Secretary of State, who is on a tour of the region, said Washington is committed to developing the partnership and cooperation with Jordan and to continue working with the Kingdom to enhance regional security and stability.

The meeting also touched on a conference due to be held in London next month to discuss support for the Jordanian economy and investment in the Kingdom, and the King said that he looked forward to an effective US participation in it.

His Majesty and Pompeo also talked about the latest developments in Syria, and stressed the need to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves the unity of the country and its people, and ensures the safe return of Syrian refugees to their country.

On the Palestinian issue, King Abdullah stressed the need to reach a just and lasting peace that would end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict according to the two-state solution, stressing the importance of the US role in pushing the process forward.

His Majesty also said Israeli escalation in Jerusalem and violations against Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif should come to an end.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the King's adviser and director of his office and the American Chargé d'Affaires in Amman.
