Skirmish between PKK militants and Turkish servicemen on border with Iran

The skirmish between the militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish servicemen occurred in Aralik settlement of Turkey's Igdir province on the border with Iran, Trend reports referring to the Turkish media on Jan. 4.

As a result of the shooting, one serviceman was killed and two servicemen were injured.

The incident occurred after a mortar attack by PKK militants in the direction of one of military units.

After the incident, the Turkish Armed Forces launched local operations to eliminate PKK militants.

The conflict between Turkey and PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has lasted more than 25 years, claiming more than 40,000 lives. PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by the UN and the EU.
