Oman Olympic Committee seminar focuses on foot, ankle, leg injuries


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Oman Olympic Committee's (OOC) Sports Medicine Committee on Sunday organised a workshop under the theme 'Sports Podiatry'.

The workshop, held at Oman Olympic Academy, targeted physiotherapists of national teams and sports clubs with the aim of familiarising them with the latest developments in the field of podiatry.

Sports podiatry is the treatment of foot, ankle, leg and knee injuries by altering lower limb function using a variety of methods, including insoles, footwear and exercises.

The workshop was attended by Sheikh Saif bin Hilal al Hosni, acting OOC chairman, a number of OOC board members, and Dr Mahmood bin Saif al Jufaili, chairman of Sports Medicine Committee.

Addressing the workshop, Dr Jufaili specified the Sports Medicine Committee's objectives and its role in setting up a network of physiotherapists, honing their skills in sports medicine in various specialties, propagating sports medical culture and coordinating with the sports associations and clubs and stakeholders through various programmes.

The programmes include annual workshops, courses, activities and events approved by the OOC Board of Directors.

Dr Fahad bin Salim bin Mubarak al Shamsi, a podiatrist at Aspetar Hospital, Qatar, talked about several areas including introduction to podiatry, treatment of spinal cord ailments, bio-mechanical evaluation and how to choose sports footwear.

He pointed out that this specialty is widely studied in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US.

He also dealt with the functions of lower limbs, avoidance of overload on the injury area and the use of other medical equipment using the laser and ultra-shock.
