Doha: Qatar Foundation (QF), through its most recent ‘Art Atelier' exhibition has highlighted and celebrated the nation's rich culture and heritage.

Designed to showcase Qatar's past, present, and future through art, the exhibition — under the theme of ‘Journey through Ancient to Modernized Art in Doha' highlighted the country's diversity and how, as a multifaceted society, it blends tradition with modernity.

The exhibition brought together 10 local and international artists, allowing members of the community to learn more about various styles and techniques, while serving as a platform for social engagement, discussion, and interaction.

Each artist showcased two pieces of artwork — specially designed in a workshop prior to the exhibition —highlighting the region's rich heritage and culture. The ten-day exhibition was held at the QF Recreation Centre in Education City.

Nada Khalil is one of the artists that took part in the ‘Art Atelier' for the first time, though she has previously joined exhibition at the Fire Station artistic hub and Souq Waqif.

'A large part of my work is showcasing Qatar's culture, from the past to the future, through the image of the falcon, which, I believe, is a symbol for strength and courage, she said.

As an art teacher in Qatar, Nada said it is important to encourage artists to pursue their passions. 'Everyone has a different perspective. I only provide the tools, teaching students how to paint, how hold a pencil, how to draw. I do not teach them how to ‘see' things, or how to ‘make' their own art, she said.

Mala Waseem, another participating artist, said, 'The aim of my artwork on display at the exhibition is to document and protect Qatar's heritage.

Talking about her work, one of which was a painting of the National Museum of Qatar, she said, 'The architects drew inspiration from the desert sand rose. The building itself is a piece of art, and includes features from the original infrastructure, while incorporating contemporary elements. My artwork aims to celebrate and honour this.

Eiman Al Mansouri, senior supervisor of Event Logistics and Support, QF, said, 'This is our third ‘Art Atelier' event, and, once again, it has proven incredibly popular with both artists and visitors alike.

'Each of the pieces that were on display here were intrinsically linked to Qatar, through the overarching theme designed to showcase the country's journey from past to present. Ultimately, through this exhibition and dedicated space, we hope to encourage the preservation of Qatar's national heritage, while promoting Arab Islamic values and identity.

The exhibition was an opportunity for the artists to interact with the public. Qatar is fast becoming a hub for the arts, and through social interaction and engagement with the public, the participants sought to encourage and inspire aspiring artists.

In line with its objective of serving as a platform for social engagement, discussion, and interaction, QF also offers guided tours around Education City that give members of the community the opportunity to learn more about the artwork displayed around the campus.

Part of the ‘Art Trail' program, the artwork created by local and regional artists aims encourage an appreciation of the arts, while highlighting the country's rich heritage, customs, and traditions.
