(MENAFN) Residents declared that hundreds escaped late Sunday after Boko Haram set their houses alight close to Nigeria's northeastern city of Maiduguri.
They added that Boko Haram members in many trucks attacked Maiborti village, five kilometers (miles) outside Maiduguri, shooting aimlessly and setting residencies alight.
A military officer confirmed that soldiers and fighter aircraft were dispatched to the village and struggled to evacuate the militants after "fierce battle".
It was not determined whether there were fatalities in the attack, which once again underlined the weak security situation in the troubled region.
