S. Africa: 21 die in botched circumcision

(MENAFN) Authorities declared that up to 21 boys have been killed in South Africa after botched circumcision since the summer initiation season started in November.

The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, also called Contralesa, confirmed that the Eastern Cape province, which is a home for illegal circumcision, recorded 17 fatalities, while North West and the Western Cape provinces recorded 2 fatalities.

Contralesa added that a probe has been initiated into the surroundings of the deaths.

The fatalities were recorded despite a stepped-up operation on illegal initiation schools in a bid to meet the goal of zero victims during the initiation season.
