FAO, Arab League sign USD 500,000 food aid prog.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Dec 17 (KUNA) -- UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) signed on Monday with Arab League a food aid program worth USD 500,000 to boost efforts in combating poverty and food shortages in the Arab world.
In a statement, the League said the program highlights the commitment of the two parties to work together with the countries of the region to achieve the second goal of the sustainable development goals of eradicating hunger, providing improved food security and nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture by 2030.
The agreement comes at a time when hunger and malnutrition are increasing again, affecting 40.2 million people in the region, while social, economic and climatic conflicts are exacerbating the problem, affecting production and access to key resources, the statement noted.
"As a result of this situation, efforts are now needed more to address the deterioration of food and nutrition, including the security situation in the region and to build partnerships that can strengthen the capacity of countries to fight hunger," FAO Assistant Director-General for the Near East and North Africa Abdulsalam Ould Ahmad said.
Ahmad added the agreement was an extension of the long-term partnership between the two sides, describing it as a "milestone" that would help push forward joint efforts to build a region free of poverty.
"The historic commitment to the 2030 agenda can become a reality if we work together and the interrelated agenda goals mean that players have to collaborate and share knowledge, Ahmad added. (end) mfm.mb
