Jordanian FM, EU official affirm illegality of Israeli settlement policies

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, Dec 16 (KUNA) -- Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi and European Union Special Representative for the Peace Process Susanna Terstal on Sunday stressed the illegality of Israeli settlement policies that violate international law and undermine prospects for peace.
This came during a meeting between the two sides in Amman, where both stressed the importance of launching an effective international effort to break the deadlock in the peace process and progress towards a two-state solution in accordance with the UN resolutions, Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Al-Safadi and Terstal warned of the consequences of the continued absence of prospects for achieving a breakthrough in the peace efforts, reviewing the developments related to the peace process and ways to activate them, the statement added.
The statement quoted Al-Safadi praising the EU's positions in support of the two-state solution and its continued support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), stressing the centrality of the European role in efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
He pointed out that the region will not enjoy comprehensive peace without resolving it on the basis of a two-state solution that meets the right of the Palestinians to freedom and the state on the lines of June 4, 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital. (end) mgb.aa
