Amman, Dec. 14 (Petra) - Jordan and Japan on Friday launched the first round of the strategic dialogue meetings that the two countries agreed to hold on a regular basis to discuss mechanisms for developing bilateral relations and coordinating positions on regional and international issues of common concern.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi discussed with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, means to build on the results of the fruitful discussions held by His Majesty King Abdullah II with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese officials during the King's visit to Tokyo last month.
During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the two ministers affirmed that the launch of the strategic dialogue reflects the importance of the relations that have been developed by Jordan and Japan and the centrality of these relations for them.
Safadi stressed the importance that Jordan attaches to strengthening partnership with Japan. He also voiced appreciation of Tokyo's support for the national economy and the development process.
For his part, Kono stressed his country's keenness to develop the strategic partnership with Jordan and to increase coordination and consultation with the Kingdom.
He also stressed the importance of the effective Jordanian role and efforts led by His Majesty King Abdullah II to enhance security and stability, achieve comprehensive peace, fight terrorism and build bridges of cooperation with the international community.
During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed developments in the region, especially those related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Syrian crisis and the war on terror.
The two ministers stressed the need to activate efforts to break the deadlock in the peace process and achieve a comprehensive peace through meeting the right of the Palestinian people to freedom, state and a decent life. Safadi warned that the continued occupation and failure to find achieve justice for the Palestinian people and the establishment of an independent state on the lines of the fourth of June 1967 with East Jerusalem, is the greatest threat to the security and stability of the region.
Safadi and Kono agreed on the importance of reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves Syria's unity and stability.
The two ministers stressed continued cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which constitutes a common threat that must be confronted.
They also welcomed the agreements produced by Sweden's consultations on Yemen and considered them an important step towards finding a political solution to the crisis. The two ministers agreed to hold the second round of strategic dialogue in Japan next year.
