The head of Iran's Headquarters for Combating Smuggling of Goods and Foreign Exchange has announced that fuel smuggling in the past 2 to 3 months has decreased by 3 million liters per day.

'The volume of fuel smuggled from the country two months ago was 10-15 million liters a day, but due to the measures taken, including the sale of fuel at the border with an average price and recovery of fuel cards system in border provinces, the volume of smuggling decreased by 2 to 3 million liters per day,' Ali Moayedi Khorramabadi said to reporters in Tehran, Trend reports.

He went on to add that 200,000 fuel card which were used to smuggle fuel, were identified and destroyed in the border provinces of Iran.

'The fuel price in the border provinces of the country was chosen in a way that the difference in fuel prices with the other side of the border would not be tangible, and as a result, fuel smuggling through borders has dropped significantly,' he added.

Khorramabadi went on to say that the difference in fuel prices inside and outside the country depends on the eastern, northern, and southern borders.

'Currency fluctuations caused reverse illicit trafficking in the country and we still have to deal with smuggling of livestock, and basic goods,' he said.
