(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday inaugurated the newly constructed ring road in western Herat province.
According to local officials, construction of the 50 kilometers road that connects several districts of the province with Herat Industrial Park has begun in 2012.
The project cost $30 million funded by Italy. Cargo trucks would no longer pass inside Herat city and use the ring road instead.
Shah Hussain Murtazavi, deputy spokesman of the president, said that the first track of the Lapiz Lazuli route was also inaugurated by the president on Thursday.
Representatives from Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey attended the inauguration of the trans-regional route at the Maulana Jalaluddin Balkhi Hall.
Murtazavi said that inauguration of the Lapiz Lazuli Route would turn Herat province into a connection point between Afghanistan and other countries.
The first shipment of Afghan products which include more than 175 tons of cotton, dried fruit and sesame will be exported through the route within the frame of TIR Carnet.
The trans-regional corridor will encompass mainly railways and highways, which will connect the city of Torghundi in Herat with the port of Turkmenbashi on the shore of the Caspian Sea via Ashgabat.
