Trump may name Williams as assistant secretary of state


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump intends to nominate Robert Williams, a senior intelligence officer with considerable expertise on Afghanistan and Pakistan, as assistant secretary of state for South Asian affairs.

The White House said on Wednesday Williams, for more than 20 years, had specialised in South Asian and Afghanistan affairs as an analyst and intelligence officer.

Since 2017, he has served at Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC, as associate deputy director for intelligence and Directorate for Operations.

Previously, he was the national intelligence officer for South Asia at the National Intelligence Council and defense intelligence officer for South Asia at DIA.

Williams has also been an adjunct associate professor at Georgetown University€™s School of Foreign Service since 2017, and served as a senior adjunct professorial lecturer at American University€™s School of International Service from 2013 to 2016.

He earned his BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and MA from The George Washington University in 1996. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Intelligence Superior Service Medal.
