OAS voices greatest concern over Russian military aircraft in Venezuela

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- The Organization of American States (OAS) said late Wednesday that it "takes note with the greatest concern" over reports about the possibility that "aircraft capable of using nuclear weapons" from Russia are in Venezuela's territory.

The OAS said in a statement that "the presence of this foreign military mission violates the Venezuelan Constitution," and that it considers such act "harmful to Venezuelan sovereignty." It stressed that "this action may also be in violation of fundamental norms of international law," as Venezuela is a State Party to the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, stressing it violation "is a serious threat to international peace and security.

"Likewise, the General Secretariat observes with extreme concern the participation of military capabilities of extra-regional powers in the Hemisphere outside the constitutional framework of the countries, and far from the transparency and mutual trust that should guide these activities," the statement noted.

It affirmed that "such attitudes do not contribute to peace or hemispheric stability, values of the utmost importance to preserve for coexistence in the region." Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a tweet that "Russia's government has sent bombers halfway around the world to Venezuela.

"The Russian and Venezuelan people should see this for what it is: two corrupt governments squandering public funds, and squelching liberty and freedom while their people suffer," he remarked. (end) si.hb
