Bangladesh temporary closes online news sites ahead of election


(MENAFN) Bangladesh's telecoms regulator has closed dozens of online news portals for some hours on Monday, as officials scrutinize inspect hundreds of sites before a parliamentary election this month.

The action takes place as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government is already confronted with criticism for suggesting laws which several reporters concerned are targeting curbing press freedom.

IIG President Sarwar Alam Shikder confirmed: "When an issue is raised to us by the commission which is related to law and order of the country, we are bound to comply."

He added: "It is the responsibility of this ministry to bring all news portals under a system so that they can run smoothly."
