Shaktikanta Das takes charge as new RBI Governor

A day after he was appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das, on Wednesday, took charge of the central bank.

As he took up his duties, he vowed to uphold the values of the RBI.

Das was appointed to the post on Tuesday, a day after Urjit Patel abruptly resigned citing "personal reasons".

"I would not like to go into what the issues between the government and the RBI are. All issues can be resolved through discussions...Independence of RBI as an institution is very important and it will remain intact," said Das, while taking charge.


A brief look at Das' career
Career


A history graduate from St. Stephen's College, and a 1980 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, Das had served in various capacities in the Finance Ministry, before retiring as the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs.

After his retirement in May 2017, Das was appointed as a member of the 15th Finance Commission, and as the G20 Sherpa.

A staunch supporter of the demonetization, Das had proposed a plan to put indelible ink on the people's fingers to prevent them from exchanging old currency beyond specified limits in the post-demonetization phase. However, after heavy backlash, the plan was scrapped.
