Vaisala Selected to Supply Urban Weather and Air Quality Solution to Schools in Sydney

Vaisala, the global leader in environmental and industrial measurements, will provide 20 Australian primary schools in the Sydney metropolitan area with Vaisala meteorological and air quality sensor network, mobile communications gateway, and cloud-based data acquisition platform (Beacon Cloud). The sensors and sensor data will be fundamental to a citizen science project funded by the Australian Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, with the objective of increasing students' scientific understanding of urban environments.

The solar powered sensor network and mobile communication gateway that streams the data to the Vaisala Beacon Cloud platform will be installed at the schools in the beginning of 2019. The air quality and automatic weather station data as well as the software solution provided by Vaisala will be used in classroom activities developed by science researchers and science communicators. This program has been developed by UNSW, Sydney (the University of New South Wales).

"Students will collect and analyze research-quality data for use in curriculum-aligned classroom activities. The data will also be freely available online via our website, enabling students and the public to visualize trends as well as explore weather and air quality conditions in real time," says Dr Melissa Hart from the Schools Weather Air Quality (SWAQ) project. "We aim to collect high-quality data for urban climate and air quality research as well as engage school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Vaisala has an international reputation for reliable, high-quality sensors, so they were a natural choice for the instruments. We were also incredibly impressed by their company ethos and level of enthusiasm for the project."

"Almost 90% of Australia's population lives in cities. Sydney's population is predicted to grow by 30% within twenty years, most of which is slated for the semi-rural fringes. The resulting urbanization will adversely impact temperature and air quality in these areas of rapid population growth. The data collected will allow, for the first time, detailed spatial analyses and modelling of the impacts of urbanisation on Sydney's weather, climate and air quality," Dr Hart continues.

"We are proud and excited to be the solution supplier in this educational project that we believe will be a great example for any school anywhere in the world on how to develop their science education partnering with a company with deep roots in innovation and research. In addition to being used in the class room, the project data will be available for the public to monitor conditions in real-time at the schools and on the SWAQ website, as well as to the government and the international scientific community. It is easy and simple to connect Vaisala's sensors to the Beacon Cloud platform offering great tools for school children and people in general to collect local air quality data, use it for studies, and study the data in real time," says John Liljelund, Head of Air Quality, Vaisala.
