Documentation for expats in Indonesia to be simplified

(MENAFN- Asia Times)

Indonesia may soon introduce measures devised to make life easier for expat workers. Under the measures, the processes by which work permits and other documentation are obtained may be streamlined.

Statistics from the Indonesian Manpower Ministry suggest that the country currently has fewer than 100,000 foreign workers employed in mid to high-level positions, The Jakarta Post reported.

President Joko Widodo stated that the Indonesian government was constantly improving, and that this makes it easier to attract foreign investment and talent, which then pushes the economy forward. To back his claims, Widodo issued Presidential Decree No. 20/2018, which will simplify the process of granting employment permits to expat workers.

The smoothness of the process by which work permits are issued has been identified as vital for attracting foreign talent.

Now the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is responsible for managing the process of making business permits easier to get. The Manpower Ministry has also played its part by linking with the Law and Human Rights Ministry and forming an online system for work permit applications.

With the new system in place, expats can have temporary stay, temporary work and investment permits issued in one administrative procedure taking six working days. In the past, the far more complex process would have taken 40 days.

In addition, the requirement for expat workers to acquire a business license before working in Indonesia has also been annulled. As long as the employer has one, expat workers can obtain other necessary documents without applying for an additional business license.
