A 31-year-old Indonesian woman in Taipei City, Taiwan, who was in her first week as a caregiver to the seven-month-old infant son of an Indonesian couple, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly abusing the child.

At 5am on December 9, the child's parents received a telephone call from their caregiver, informing them that their infant son was unconscious, the Taiwan Apple Daily reported.

The couple rushed to meet them at Taipei Bridge MRT station, and from there they took a taxi to Wanfang Hospital.

Despite the fact that the child did not show obvious signs of injury, a specialist found the child had severe bleeding on the brain which required an emergency operation. During the operation the caregiver, who was an illegal migrant worker, took the opportunity to flee.

By 5:30pm on the same day, officers from the Sanchong Precinct of New Taipei City Police Department intercepted the caregiver and arrested her for allegedly causing grievous bodily harm to the child.

She admitted to the police that she was angered by the crying infant waking her in the middle of the night. She told police that she grabbed the child, shook him, and accidentally hit his head.

During the investigation the police also found that while the child's father was a legal migrant worker, the mother was in the country illegally; the mother reportedly looked for a caregiver on the LINE mobile app platform on December 2, and hired her for NT$14,000 (US$453) a month.

The report gave no further information on the well-being of the child.
