Lebanese Pres. tells security bodies to keep close eye on S. borders

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, Dec 4 (KUNA) -- Lebanese President Michel Aoun instructed security authorities Tuesday to keep a close eye on developments at the southern borders after Israel said it discovered cross-border tunnels.
Aoun contacted parliament speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri and Army commander Joseph Aoun to assess the situation in the wake of the Israeli operation, the presidency said in a statement.
Israel's military announced today it has begun a military operation to expose underground tunnels, dug by the Lebanese Hezbollah with intention to launch attacks.
Israeli armed forces started the operation late Monday to discover these tunnels crossing into Israel, said Israel military spokesman Avichay Adraee to media.
"We were aware of a number of tunnels crossing into Israel from Lebanon from the north, and that the army would only be operating within Israel without crossing the border", he added. (end) kbs.bs
