(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GAZA, Dec 4 (KUNA) -- Israel's military announced Tuesday it has begun a military operation to expose underground tunnels, dug by the Lebanese Hezbollah with intention to launch attacks.
Israeli armed forces started the operation late Monday to discover these tunnels crossing into Israel, said Israel military spokesman Avichay Adraee to media.
"We were aware of a number of tunnels crossing into Israel from Lebanon from the north, and that the army would only be operating within Israel without crossing the border", he added.
"A special military team has been working since 2014 with the Israeli intelligence corps and northern command in dealing with technical and intelligence information related to the tunnels issue", he continued.
In recent years, a defense plan was issued to confront any threats in the area including construction of walls and rock barriers, in addition to dredging lands to prevent any attacks, the spokesman added.
In a video broadcasted on Israeli media, the Army warned Hezbollah and Lebanese Army from risking troops' lives if "anybody approaches the tunnels routes." Adraee said these actions affect Lebanon and endanger the lives of its citizens.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon UNIFIL described the situation in southern Lebanon as "quite", said UNIFIL spokeswoman Malini Yansen.
"UNIFIL reviewed media reports with all parties involved to guarantee the right use of UNINILL coordination mechanism to ensure stability and security of the region", she continued.(end) ayb.nhq
