Millions of smuggled cigarettes seized in NZ

(MENAFN) Authorities in New Zealand have seized 1.8 million of smuggled cigarettes in the country's biggest case of tobacco fraud.

According to the customs, an Auckland businessman was arrested trying to leave the country last week as officers revealed garbage bags filled with cash and thousands of cartons in properties across the city.

Police also captured multiple properties including luxury cars and bank accounts as part of a six-month investigation that started with the discovery of smuggled tobacco in shipping containers.

Customs also said the tax evaded by the smuggling would have been at least $NZ1.8 million, the largest such case in New Zealand.
