Oman- Document to protect, develop Arab environment released

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- H E Mohammed bin Salim bin Said al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, and Dr Meshal bin Fahm al Salmi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, announced the release of a document on the protection and development of the Arab environment on Tuesday.

The release event was held in the presence of H E Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, Chairman of State Council, and was attended by a number of ministers, members of the Arab Parliament, H E Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis A'Shura, members of the State Council and Majlis A'Shura, and a number of Arab ambassadors accredited to the sultanate.

In a welcome speech, Dr Khalid bin Salim al Saidi, Secretary General of the State Council, said that the release coincides with the celebrations of the 48th National Day of Oman. The publication of the document reflects the growing Arab interest in the protection of the environment and shows a keenness to preserve it through a comprehensive vision and effective measures. It also contributes to the development of natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations, Dr Saidi added.

He said that the sultanate attaches great importance to the protection of the environment and has been making great efforts to safeguard its resources since the initiation of the Blessed Renaissance. The legislative pillars of comprehensive development are focused on achieving the national development goals by preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of resources.

Omani Environment Day is celebrated every year on January 8, and this validates Oman's interest in the environment.

He added that the Sultan Qaboos Award for Environmental Protection, which is the first Arab award in the environmental field, is the culmination of the sultanate's efforts in the service of environmental and development issues.

H E Toobi informed that since the beginning of the Blessed Renaissance, the sultanate has worked to establish a balance between environmental protection and development requirements. This has been done by paying attention to environmental considerations during the planning and implementation stages of development projects.

This has assured safety of the environment, pollution control and conservation of protected wildlife, and conserved and made sustainable use of natural resources, while monitoring and assessing climate change in order to preserve the integrity of environmental, social and economic systems.

H E Toobi stressed that the release of the document is another new achievement for the Arab Parliament and comes in line with efforts to achieve sustainable development in various fields. The document is the result of extensive discussions and in-depth studies conducted by the Committee on Social, Educational and Cultural Affairs, Women and Youth in the Arab Parliament and approved by it.

The Council of the League of Arab States adopted it at the 29th summit held in Saudi Arabia in April to establish a comprehensive vision of the environment and the need to protect it based on the teachings of Islamic Sharia'a, the values of authentic Arab culture, and the principles of human rights that emphasise safe and clean living to achieve the development of sustainability.

Dr Salmi said that the document is considered an Arab reference law for the protection and development of the environment and emphasises the interdependence between the protection of the environment and sustainable development.
