Kuwait- Arab Maghreb Union rebuffs European proposal to set up immigration centers

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, Nov 24 (KUNA) -- The Arab Maghreb Union has rejected a European proposal to establish immigration centers for Africans in the union member countries.
The AMU refuses to turn the member countries, namely Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Mauritanian into a "gendarmerie for serving European interests," said Said Moqaddam, Secretary General of the union Advisory Council in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), on Saturday.
There are problems in the African coastal countries and countries in the west of the continent and European states should coordinate with them to find solutions to social and economic problems, instead of pressuring them to set up such centers, he said.
Countries in North Africa the Arab Maghreb have become settlement, rather than passing, destinations for the African migrants, he said, urging for coordination among the regional countries to "face the European pressures to set up centers for the African immigration seekers." Algeria's proposal to hold a meeting at the ministerial level is an opportunity to thaw relations among the union states, he added, noting that such a gathering would address other regional issues such as the Libyan crisis.
The Union Advisory Council is the legislative assembly with members representing the five regional states.
Immigration from Africa has been a main concern for the European countries since a long time ago. These Africans seek safety, jobs and social rights. (end) mr.rk
